Difference between panic attack & anxiety attack

Although the terms panic attack and anxiety attack are often used interchangeably, they are not the same. Both involve intense feelings of fear or distress, but they differ in onset, duration, and severity.

Panic Attack
A panic attack is a sudden, intense episode of fear that often peaks within minutes. It may occur without an obvious trigger and can include symptoms like rapid heartbeat, sweating, chest pain, dizziness, and shortness of breath. Panic attacks are recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and can be a symptom of panic disorder.

Anxiety Attack
Anxiety attacks are not a formal medical term but describe episodes of heightened anxiety. They usually build gradually in response to a perceived threat or stressor. Symptoms may include restlessness, muscle tension, difficulty concentrating, and trouble sleeping. Anxiety attacks are often linked to generalized anxiety disorder or other anxiety-related conditions.

Key Difference: Panic attacks are sudden and intense, while anxiety attacks are more gradual and linked to ongoing worry. Understanding the distinction helps in seeking the right treatment and coping strategies.
